So your kid get’s good grades or does some extrordinary act of obedience and deserves a reward. You may not know about this little treasure in Yreka but please take note of Don’s Sporting Goods. Pass through those plain brown doors and enter another era! Inside is the most charming avacado green formica soda bar lined with an array of inviting chrome bar stools. Not only does it serve as a sporting goods store but also a favorite meeting spot for regulars to drink coffee have a fresh donut, and most importantly a great place to take your kid for the best milk shakes and malts in town. Made the old fashion way with real ice cream-SO YUMMY!
The conversation with my daughter usually sways back and forth between what a great deed you did to deserve this special treat to discussions of the huge array of taxidermy all around the store. Today’s observation: “They need a buffalo! They got just about everything else!”
Don’s Sporting Goods opened in 1966 by Don Davis. Don’s son, Drake Davis is the current proprietor. I once had the privledge of having my shake made by Don’s wife, Rene. Such a sweet lady. She passed away last March.
I know one employer in town that gives his employees coupons for a ‘free shake from Don’s’ as kudos for a good job! A great idea!

Sporting Goods, Taxidermy and Chocolate Malts - It’s a winner for Yreka!
