This weekend we are bracing for a BIG snow storm. So we have no serious plans, unless shoveling driveways are considered plans-hmph, seriously! Of course we could watch the superbowl - oh, oops! Thanks to our local cable company dispute with Fox no superbowl! (don’t even get me started). So, I resort to reminiscing - January 2007 our friends took us on a great hike in the hills east of I-5 between Grenada and Yreka. The destination was this particular clearing or landing of sorts. There’s this fantastic view of Mt. Shasta (of course) and on the ground are rocks that look like they were placed long ago in the shape of an arrow. The arrow points directly to Black Butte, not Mt. Shasta interestingly. So who put them there? and why? I don’t know! Ancient legends about Black Butte pretty much paint it as an ‘apartment’ for the Great Creator’s rebellious daughter that ran off and eloped with the grizzly bear. Crazy kids! Couldn’t control them then, can’t control them now. Anyways, I sure would like to know what this arrow pointing to Black Butte might mean. If anyone knows, please fill us in!
If you are interested in this hike I’m afraid I can’t help you, as we were just tourists on this trip and I don’t know if I could get there again without help; however if you are interested in hiking Black Butte itself click here for a great little website about it.
Click here to read the Shasta Legend. It’s pretty neat.

Note - the arrow is a little vague in the photo and only slightly more evident in person.
