Applehead Find - Mexican Jumping Beans

Last summer we stopped in a toy store while on vacation in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. Cute cute cute shop!!! Left with a small plastic box of 5 mexican jumping beans for the little zapper (and me). These provided hours of entertainment watching them jerk and hop around. “How do they work? and What are they?”, you ask? Well, apparently there’s a little worm inside the seed. When they get too warm or uncomfortable they jerk their little bodies and that’s what makes the jumping beans jump.

I loved these little things so much that I brought them to work. They give me kind of a warm fuzzy feeling as they clink against the plastic - they’re so cute! Well here’s the kicker. They haven’t been jumping for quite a while. I thought they were maybe dead, but today one of them hatched! Check it out! I didn’t know that could happen. The little moth is only supposed to live for a day or so. If it was in it’s native land of Mexico it’d probably be off mating and laying eggs as quickly as it could, but here in Yreka its fate is pretty dismal. Poor guy!

Can’t get these anywhere in Siskiyou County - that I know of! But you can get them here: www.jumping-beans.com when they are in season.  Great fun, honest!

Adios muchachos!
