Gardening in Siskiyou County

For those of you who may be new to Siskiyou County, especially north county, I thought I should pass along this bit of local folk wisdom about gardening in Siskiyou County. The old timers know that you cannot plant your warm weather crops outside until the snow has melted of the top of Goosenest Mountain. If you look to the east of Yreka, in the foothills beyond Montague, the horizon will have two main mountains in the farthest horizon. The taller peak to the south is called Whaleback and the peak to the north is called Goosenest, suposedly because it resembles a goosenest??

Anyways, we live in a somewhat alpine / dessert like climate with many micro climates which can be challenging for the backyard gardener. Look for veggies with the shortest lengths to maturity (especially tomatoes). We tend to get one late freeze around April, so don’t be fooled and plant too soon (although sometimes we get lucky). Happy Gardening! - in couple weeks:(

Actually, the peak you’re pointing to in that photo is Ball Mountain (good Christmas tree hunting, FYI). The next peak to the right is Goosenest (and the visible vocanic crater at the top does kinda make it look like a nest. Whaleback (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/201607/-the-whaleback.html) is the big, rounded peak just to the left of Shasta when viewed from the north valley (I’d never figured that last bit out until I discovered Summit Post).

Zac, so all this time I’ve been misinformed about which peaks are named Goosenest and Whaleback?! That is too funny! I appreciate the info! Certainly explains why I never understood the whole goosenest thing. Doesn’t get my garden planted any sooner though. wehhh.

Yeah, Goosenest is the mountain on the right of the picture. The arrow is pointing to Willow Creek Mountain. Willow Creek, then Goosenest, then Whaleback, then Mount Shasta. :)
