For those of you who may be new to Siskiyou County, especially north county, I thought I should pass along this bit of local folk wisdom about gardening in Siskiyou County. The old timers know that you cannot plant your warm weather crops outside until the snow has melted of the top of Goosenest Mountain. If you look to the east of Yreka, in the foothills beyond Montague, the horizon will have two main mountains in the farthest horizon. The taller peak to the south is called Whaleback and the peak to the north is called Goosenest, suposedly because it resembles a goosenest??

Anyways, we live in a somewhat alpine / dessert like climate with many micro climates which can be challenging for the backyard gardener. Look for veggies with the shortest lengths to maturity (especially tomatoes). We tend to get one late freeze around April, so don’t be fooled and plant too soon (although sometimes we get lucky). Happy Gardening! - in couple weeks:(
