I’ll admit that sometimes I’m a little slow on the uptake, but have any of you Yrekans noticed the new milk carton on top of North Siskiyou Dairy by the bowling alley? I suspect it has been here for sometime (like maybe as long as a year), but I just noticed it today!
I love our milk carton! I took a picture of it around September 2006, just because you don’t see giant milk cartons on top of buildings too often. Back then it was Crystal brand milk. Today it’s Berkeley Farms brand milk!? So I asked a friend of mine if she had noticed this change and she commented that as a matter of fact there was a recent article in the Sacramento Bee about Crystal, their buyout and the effect on the dairy farmers. If you’re interested here’s the article.

Apparently Crystal was purchased about a year ago by a company back east and things have gone down hill for Crystal every since. I don’t know all the details (I’m not an investigative reporter), but the bottom line seems to be that a lot of people lost their jobs and a lot of dairy farms have lost their contracts.
What does this have to do with Siskiyou County? I’m not really sure, but I think it is soooo cool that North Siskiyou Dairy took the time and effort to change their milk carton to reflect their new brand. They could have just taken the old Crystal carton down. I really appreciate their effort! The carton used to spin, right? That would be cool. I think our town would be that much better if we had more giant novelties on top of buildings - you know, giant donuts on top of the donut shop, giant ants on top of pest control trucks, giant burgers or fat guys on top of restaurants…..oooh oooh how about a giant gold pan?!!
Anyhoo, I just wanted to say thanks to North Siskiyou Dairy Products for the giant novelty milk carton! Yea for giant stuff on top of buildings!
