Yreka Greenway Project

A while back I posted a little ditty about the Yreka Greenway Project-click here to refresh your memory.  I’d even forgotten about that post and had to go back and read it.  Seems I was pretty excited about the apparent progress on the Greenway project.  Well I finally had the opportunity (which really means, the time) to walk it.  Me and the kid parked on Oberlin and headed out on our little trek.

There did seem to be a clear walking path…..I guess.  We came upon a little clearing near the creek that was fun.  It had a little gravel beach and some planks that crossed the water and were fun to walk on.  We goofed around there for a few minutes and then got back on the ‘path’ and kept going.  We came to an impassable dead end!  The creek goes under the freeway here and there was no way to cross.

Then it occured to me that we were probably supposed to cross the creek back at the gravel beach where the planks were (which was about half the way back again from where we were now).  That’s ok!  This is a mission.  We must figure this out!  So back we went, crossed the creek and walked in the general direction of the Siskiyou County Museum, the goal of the walk.

We found the freeway overpass once again (now on the correct side of the water).  What a sight!  Graffitti, litter and a dark, scary tunnel that goes under the freeway! Still, on a mission, we zipped through the scary tunnel.  The other side of the tunnel was really confusing too!  There was path on the other side of the creek which you could get to if you crossed the branches and broken boards that seemed to be held together by litter captured in the current OR we could go through the weird tunnel that was hacked out of the shrubbery.

Well, the details from this point on aren’t really important other than to note that with one wet foot and two bad attitudes we turned around at the point and headed home without making it to our destination.  And although more confused and disturbed than when we started one thing is clear; the Yreka Greenway is a long ways from being complete or even particularly usable at this point.

Apparently, the only portion completed is that portion we were not successful in reaching.  I was reassured that it will all be done sometime within the next 25-50 years!  Woo hoo!
