At the Yreka Gold Rush Days I met Rick Richardson. Rick had the smallest booth in the entire festival. It consisted of two red chairs, one occupied by him. The other soon became occupied by me as he shared some excerpts from his book. I have to admit he was pretty charming with that whole ‘I’m an old guy and you’re a young chic willing to listen to my cowboy poetry’ thing. Who could resist?!
So Mr. Richardson has published a charming book of some of his cowboy poetry called “Cowboys Then and Now”. I just finished reading it cover to cover this morning. I actually laughed out loud reading these rustic yarns about ranchers, girls and gun slingers.
Richardson’s poetry takes you right to the very edge of risque and then quickly pulls you back to an innocent, old fashioned punch line. It is so fun to read and the illustrations by Dolores Tronti are wonderful.
Being the independent spirit that he is, Rick Richardson’s self published books are not readily available in local book stores. His other work is titled “Ballads of the Sierra“. You can visit Richardson’s website for ordering information here.
