In Observance of the Fair

It’s not good — it’s not bad — it’s FAIR!!! If you are new to these parts there is one lesson you will learn quickly this time of year - the Siskiyou County Fair is a BIG DEAL and there is nothing you can do about it!

Having come from Southern Oregon I was not very enthusiastic about going to the fair. I thought “so what, it’s just the fair, a few rides, some smelly animal pens and lots of sweaty people….” I soon learned that if you plan on fitting in in this community you either go to the fair or go to h—! (maybe a slight exaggeration - but not much)

Businesses will close their doors for the whole week for fair. Shop owners are busy busy busy just before the fair. Kids save their money all year for the fair. People come from every backwoods location far and wide to go to the fair. The town morphs - it is all about the fair!

So, I have since learned to enthusiastically embraced the fair. Cotton candy, funnel cake, corn dog, curly fries, indian taco, sno cones — carnival rides, country music, award winning livestock, vegetables, and art — My favorite is the GIANT animals booth. Usually only costs 50 cents to see the World’s Biggest Pig or the the World’s Biggest Horse or the Worlds Biggest Alligator. This is the best money spent at the fair - I tell you the truth!!!

So hold on to your suspenders - here it comes - The Siskiyou County Fair!

See you there!  You will find me here:

12pm Terriyaki on a stick line

1pm Indian Taco, Pulled pork BBQ sandwich or Cattlewomens Hamburger line

2pm Sno Cone line

3pm Cotton Candy line

4pm Giant Pickle line

5pm Terriyaki on a stick again!

Eeeeee!!! I can’t wait!!!

debbie, you forgot the part of your schedule that included riding on the upside down rides. i LOVE them, LIVE for them, and want you to go on one with me and write about it. are you a chicken, or what? p.s. siskiyoutopia is my most favoritist website and will continue to be, but only if you go on a scary ride with me. waddayasay ta that?

Bill - Your offer is supremely tempting…. I oh so want Siskiyoutopia to be your favoritest website BUT the sad truth is that I get nauseous on the merry-go-round (I’m telling the truth!). Anything that spins more than that and I’m sick for hours!

How ’bout I take a picture of YOU on the Zipper or whichever crazy, upside down, vomit inducing ride you like and I’ll wave to you from the grassy area and YOU write about it!?

Siskiyou County Fair is fantastic! I love it. This coming from a former buckeye - the Ohio State Fair was the biggest in the country, bigger even than Texas’. But Siskiyou County’s just rocks. You can get in for free on opening day. Even on the biggest day, the crowds are tolerable and the admission fee is very reasonable. It’s always amazing to see that folks still carry on old traditions like weaving doilies and such. The rides… I haven’t tried the rides yet. I’m a bit over that but I used to really love the Zipper.

Dave - I love your enthusiasm! I agree, it is neat to see the traditional crafts. BTW I won a blue ribbon for a flower arrangement this year and my daughter won a blue ribbon for a bee balm that she submitted. We’re so proud:)

Well congratulations! I’ll look for the arrangement and bee balm when I go either today or tomorrow. I keep threatening to enter a pie, but I never seem to get around to filling out the entry form.

We also used to go to the L.A. County fair every year too. Wow, talk about huge! And there were like 1000 entries for every minute category. My favorite though was a cake submitted by some guy and it was made to look like a cat’s litter box, complete with swirls of chocolate on top that looked like… well, you know, a very full litter box. It was in one of the many cake display counters on the bottom shelf pushed to the back, like the fair officials were embarrassed to display it. I thought it should have received an award!
