Blue Goose Yreka Western Railroad

This weekend was Siskiyou County Days. “Really?!”, you say. Well, that really just means that Siskiyou County residents got to ride the Blue Goose for half price. I love a bargain so I grabbed the kid and off we went!

I’d never rode the Blue Goose before. The depot has a cute little gift shop and railroad museum of sorts. The train pulls out of the station at 11am and meambers its way to Montague through the Shasta Valley at a whopping 7 mph.

We saw some pretty country, turtles sunbathing and an ultralight gave us an exciting flyby. Lots of people waved as we passed and the little ones giggled with wide eyed excitement as the train chugged and swayed along the track and blew its whistle.

After about an hour long ride, we arrived in Montague and still had a chance to browse the farmers market. Montague had city wide yard sales Saturday and one brave soul arrived to boast his chili making skills despite the city canceling the competition. Ken handed out samples of his homemade chili and cornbread. He probably would have won! Yummy!! You have ninety minutes to hang out in Montague before the train departs for Yreka.

The Yreka Western Railroad has special events throughout the year. Check their website for upcoming events. choooo choooo chuga chuga chuga chuga choooo choooo…….:)
