Miss Lydia Fairchild
344 Third Street
J. D. Fairchild House, 1897
Queen Anne-style house. Downstairs had five rooms - sitting room, parlor, dining room, bedroom and kitchen, as well as a reception hall. Upstairs was one large bedroom and two smaller bedrooms with large closets and a bathroom. The large bedroom was called the castle tower room. Back then there was no such thing a X-rated anything, since they didn’t have movies or magazines or the internet. So once a week someone left their shades up. This was one of the most famous peep show shades in Yreka, right up there in the right hand corner. Men would come as far away as Jacksonville, Oregon to watch Miss Lydia Fairchild parade nightly before her bedroom window pretending to do calisthenics. In fact, one man, Henry Kleinmueller, the investment banker turned poet laureate of Yreka, actually wrote a poem about her which was printed in the local newspaper:
This Yreka maid had such graces
That her curves cried aloud for embraces,
“You’re looking,” said he,
“Like a million to me –
Invested in all the right places!”
