“Do you have any fruits or vegetables with you today?”
The ‘Bug Station’ will be reopening soon ~ I hear Sept 22nd is opening day. Of course the California budget controversy has been making local headlines with the eminent veto of the approved budget by the Governor. I don’t know how that may affect opening day. Nonetheless if you have plans to bring fruit or vegetables from Oregon you’d better do it soon or risk confiscation.
If you’re wondering what the Inspection Station is all about you can go to the California Dept of Agriculture website for info. It seems the biggest risk to California crops are citrus coming into the state, so don’t buy kumquats in Oregon and expect to get them home.
I understand that the Ag Dept is looking for additional staff to man the Inspection Station so now is a good time to apply if you’ve been looking to get that highly sought out state job.
Now if you’re not a drug smuggler, escaped convict, kidnapper or fruit smuggler the inspectors are really nice and helpful ~ so be nice back! They really are providing a valuable service and if you’re ‘put out’ for having to stop for maybe all of 2 minutes - well, just get over it!
