All Roads Lead to Ager

This weekend E Clampus Vitus gathered to present a newly erected monument in the town of Ager. What? You’ve never heard of Ager? Never been to Ager? Well, now you have a great reason to seek it out. Here’s a map.

We arrived early for the ‘goings on’ in the town of Ager and these fellows began to gather, all dressed in bright red shirts. Some had black vests, silly hats, and lots and lots of buttons, medals, and pins adorning their attire.

These ‘very important’, in your face, tongue in cheek, masonic mockers had a wry, kooky sense of humor, and yet they have a great knowledge of local history! Dan Weimers did a fantastic job of presenting the history of the town of Ager and explained why, at one time in our local history, all roads DID lead to Ager ~ true story!

Today the only remnant of the town of Ager is the old hotel, which has been purchased by Diane Feldman who grew up in Ager. She shared some interesting artifacts and expressed her delight in the opportunity to bring the property back to life as a place for her family to gather and enjoy time together. The hotel will not be open to the public but the monument will be in place for all to see as a remembrance of the once bustling town of Ager.

A big thanks goes out to E Clampus Vitus. You may not know who this group is (frankly, I’m not sure they know who they are), but they have done a great service in providing a reminder to our past. I got such a charge out of these fellows! They even gave us an honorary medal, a button and some cool books about E Clampus Vitus and more local history! I was so honored and instantly felt much more important!:)

It’s too bad the hotel/general store’s not open any more. Going to Copco is just too far for a one day trip from Dunsmuir - it’d be nice to have a spot to stop for the night.
But seriously, you’ve gotta watch yourself in Ager, they’re just one small letter away from anger!

My husband and I took a trip to “Beswick” (out past/in the Copco area) a couple of years ago; it was worth the several miles of bad road. A very nice family keeps an eye on things in the general vicinity of what’s left of some very interesting buildings and landmarks, and I took lots of pictures, as my great grandmother was a schoolteacher there waaayyy back in the day. Another very nice man also keeps an eye on things, and he gave us a brief history of the visible remains of Beswick (the home of the ladies of the evening, store, schoolhouses, and such). I wish I could remember our two unofficial guides’ names, as they were just terrific!

Great blog post Debbie! Thanks. The “clampers” do great things in our county that no one else considers ~ a true service! Any idea of how to “contact” the clampers?

You can contact me about E Clampus Vitus information

Thanks Steve! I will let Claudia know how she can contact you.

Regards!
Debbie
