Apples of Gold

September is nearly gone and Autumn is ‘officially’ here. It’s the time of year when you’re either planning your Halloween costume or your thinking APPLES!! Ok, maybe you’re not doing either, (or like me, you’re doing both:) If you WERE to think about crisp, sweet, juicy organic apples, think no more. Between now and a few more weeks from now until… um.. later… like Nov-Decemberish, you can head out to Grenada and visit Apples of Gold u-pick orchard.

We’ve been visiting Willie out in Grenada for the past few years and stocking up on fuji apples for the season ~ definitely our favorite. Last year Apples of Gold made a new addition to the orchard ~ strawberries! U-can pick them too!

If you’re like me and not so inclined to do the picking yourself you can stop by the Yreka Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays and buy ‘pre-picked’ fruit (and vegetables) from Willie. And you mustn’t miss the honey! There are a number of varieties and they are all a little different. He’s also got bee pollen for you health nuts out there that know what a great little boost of energy munching on bee pollen provides!

Where is this place? Here’s a map.

Ahhh, so that’s where it is. We’ve bought their Oak Tree honey and really like it. And… we’ve made apple butter the past couple of years, so it’s good to know about another source of apples. I’m liking the idea of picking our own; that apple butter takes a LOT of apples.

Sounds great! :) I sure wish the Farmer’s Market would be “open” on some day other than the middle of the day on Wednesdays… maybe a Saturday or late afternoon, evening so folks who are working can have a opportunity to stop by and buy! Wouldn’t it be great if all the merchants could get together and form a co-op and open a little market, say in the old Black’s Building. (Years ago it was the Purity Grocery Store!) I would love that!
