Yreka Greenway Revisited

This is post number 3 on the progress of the Yreka Greenway Project. I would like to share some updates with you. First I noticed that someone has finally cleared the ‘parking area’ on Oberlin Rd of the mass of two foot tall weeds and star thistle. Thank you to whoever was responsible for that!!

Giving the Greenway Trail another chance was like returning to a restaurant after getting really poor service or food the first time. The expectation dwindles a bit, the attitude going in is far less enthusiastic and usually that allows the mediocrity to be palatable. That said ~ with lower expectations the hike was pretty good:) The best part was seeing that the graffiti was painted over! Yea!!! Big big thank you to the responsible party here!!

I have to admit some of these kids are pretty talented with the spray cans. Maybe we could have an area set aside for them to ‘express themselves’ without ruining stuff!

We were also able to make it all the way to the Visitor’s Center from the Oberlin Road entrance. The key is to go through the ‘thatch tunnel’ that hugs the cement wall. Just pretend your a hobbit! It makes it more fun!

There are parts of the trail that are really nice - even picturesque! There are other parts that are probably impassible once the creek is flowing ~ right now it is mostly dried up and there are still a couple of problem areas. We came across a campsite Keystone Light site and still a few graffiti hot spots. I won’t forget - Okay!!!??? Stop spray painting stuff - Geeeezzz!!!

On the plus side, the transients and teenagers have blazed a pretty nice walking trail that wasn’t there in June during our first attempt to walk the trail. On the other hand things were a little prettier in June - the water was flowing and wildflowers were blooming.

Kind a pretty, huh? Check out this! Just happened to look over the bridge on Oberlin Rd and catch a doe with her twins in the creek! Looks like a postcard!

I had the opportunity to visit with Jerry Mosier about a month ago. Jerry Mosier has been involved with the Yreka Greenway Project for many years and is very committed to seeing the project move forward. It was great to get a balanced perspective of the scope of this project. It truly is complicated and at this point is primarily focused on acquiring land and/or easements along the creek as well as construction of improved flood plains. The focus is not on the recreational aspects of the greenway ~ which is most disappointing to me!

So here’s the deal. The city doesn’t consider this project a priority (although the graffiti being painted over was promising). As a matter of fact it is so low on the priority scale that the city has laid off Yreka’s Parks and Recreation Director, who was in the job such a short time that most people didn’t even know Yreka had a Parks and Recreation Department! One step forward, two steps back! I don’t know Kathi Sheehan personally, but from what I hear she was highly qualified for the job. Dang! But on a happy note our City Manager and City Attorney received 5% raises recently. phewww! That’s a relief!

The only way this is going to be a priority with the city is if people start making noise about this cause. How many of you have visited Lithia Park in Ashland? There is no reason why Yreka could not have a park that is similar in beauty, function and value. We just have to demand it and work towards achieving it. The first step is to go see for yourself what the Greenway is all about (bring a friend - preferably an imposing and muscular one:)

Great post Debbie! I agree it should be a priority… maybe the merchants could all join in and help. If the greenway were as interesting as Lithia Park, it would bring tourists and likely paying customers! I doubt if most folks even know it is there!

Oh the graffiti… I think it is absolutely essential to stop it all! I lived in an area where locals didn’t think it mattered much. Everytime one sees graffiti on public or private property it should be reported both to the city police and to the city manager. When there is graffiti it is a great open invitation to gangs…. and often their graffiti isn’t easily “identifiable” as such especially at first. Many of the citizens of Yreka have no idea how horrible it can be when gangs move in…

Thanks Siskiyoutopia ! for your the great coverage about the Yreka Creek Greenway, which has so much promise for our community (flood protection, fish habitat restoration, non-motorized public transportation through town, and of course an attractive place to enjoy the wonders and struggles of nature).

The Yreka Creek Committee is currently working up 3 grant proposals for the State to consider, to purchase for the City the largest remaining undeveloped streamside lands along Yreka Creek (near Westside Road upstream of Walmart, and north of Lennox Street), plus, a 3rd grant to construct a formal trail, bridges, picnic areas and trail signing in the areas north of Oberlin Road (where your blog photos were taken).

One minor correction for the blog, the layoff of Kathi Sheehan was definitely a loss to the city in terms of parks attention because she has great skills in this area, but I understand she was never formally the “Parks and Recreation Director” but rather an employee of the Public Works Dept which manages the parks and many other city facilities.

I want to let everyone know this good news, that the State’s River Parkways program has already granted funds to develop a section of the future city-wide Greenway trail along a high quality riparian streamside habitat next to Deer Creek road. Plans are currently being developed with construction scheduled for 2009-2010 !

Little by little, the entire Yreka Creek through town will be included, with a voluntary, community-driven approach.

If you want to know more about the Yreka Creek Greenway or ask questions, send me an email, or visit the new, almost finished Yreka Creek Greenway website yrekagreenway.org.

See you along your Creek !

And the $2,000,000 in grant money went where???

Wow Jerry, This is great news! We love to hear about progress!

I know that there was a little controversy about my statements about Kathi Sheehan. I have to say, however, that not only did the website use ‘Yreka Parks and Recreation’ synonymously with Kathi’s name, but the employees at City Hall specifically referred to her as “The” Parks and Recreation Department ‘person’ despite my protests as to the existence of a Parks and Recreation Department. As a matter of fact, I felt that the reference on the Yreka Greenway Website only detracted from the website’s credibility - since the truth was and still is that Yreka does NOT have a Parks and Recreation Department! Which is why I did not retract my statement. Silly City of Yreka! Funny they didn’t bawk at the reference to the pay raises!

But I don’t want to split hairs! I just want to see the Yreka Greenway became something really great for our town. I’m a huge supporter of the Greenway Project and I know the City has the power to support it. It is not my intention to alienate the city - we need them and they do really good things for our town. But, sometimes the timing of their policies only prove that they are oblivious to public sentiment and no one seems willing to call them on it. For example the recent hiring of a part time theater manager….. but I digress…

Jerry, you’re efforts are greatly appreciated! Let us know when you have work parties scheduled and any other updates about the greenway.

Jillian, I missed your comment while I was composing my rebuttal above.

My understanding is that the big, giant, headliner, grant that was given to the Greenway project is being used on the far north end of the project-the property that is behind the waste water treatment and city yards. The money is used for flood plain restoration and (I think) acquisition of property/easements.

I think it would do the Greenway project well, from a public relations standpoint, if they disclosed to the general public exactly how those monies are/were being spent, because you are not alone in wondering what the heck happened to ALL that money!! And why it seem like we can’t see anything being done.
