Yreka Community Garden

A group has formed, their engines are primed and they’re about to do something really cool for Yreka.

It’s the Siskiyou Arboretum, and one of their projects is a community garden for Yreka headed up by a really bright and committed gal named Tiffany Paine. I met with Tiffany on the bit of land that belongs to Yreka High School that will be the future site of the Yreka Community Garden. The great thing about this land is that not only is it a great space but it has a really nice old greenhouse on it, great compost bins and it’s already fenced in.

Ok, it still could use a little a lot of work, but it’s so easy to envision it in it’s completed, boxed in, green, bountiful, glorious, gardeny state! This is such an exciting project for Yreka! I can’t wait to jump in and help!

Community gardens are so popular now days. Ashland (of course) has one, Redding has two, Mt. Shasta has one, even Dorris has one! HELLO! Even Dorris! (no offense Dorris)

So the plan will be to start with raised beds that can be ‘rented’ for a nominal annual fee. You get to plant whatever you like. You get to use the greenhouse for starting seeds and you get to water, weed, prune, and finally harvest your own crop. Some of our county supervisors might even be interested in having their own plot!

Besides great facilities for residents to garden, this project will also include community classes on things like tree pruning, composting, gardening (duh), nutrition and lots more. The possibilities are endless especially with the talent, resourcefulness and drive that the Siskiyou Arboretum has within its membership.

The Yreka Community Garden is looking for folks in the community that are interested in getting involved and donations will really help to get things rolling.

This is a great project! This may be a place where I can actually learn to get something to grow instead of die! Thanks Arboretum!
